Body Psychotherapy

Body-psychotherapy is an independent healing method enriched with psychotherapeutic traditions and contemporary innovations. The client’s body is of central importance in approaching psychological experiences, problems, traumas and blocks.

In a broader sense body-psychotherapy is a psychotherapeutic method which emphasizes the client’s physical experiences and the body is also involved in the psychotherapeutic work (breathing, voice, motion, touch, hug, etc.). In a narrower sense we consider body-psychotherapy as Reichian, post-Reichian and neo-Reichian forms of therapy, evolved from the work of Wilhelm Reich, an early follower of Freud.

Body-psychotherapies generally consider body-experiences, the reflective and prereflective body-schema, images of the body and the unconscious of the body (body-memory) as the starting point for therapeutic work. Not only instinctive drives but archaic body-experiences, body-image and the body’s own „history” (traumas and its libidinal structure) are also stored in the body’s unconscious. They determine social relations, with regard to experience-potential that can be obtained through intimacy. The preverbal experiences are especially important in body-psychotherapies, and what is more, even pre- and perinatal experiences – at least their memory at the level of physical sensations – can be retrieved with certain techniques.

Thus, the goals of body-psychotherapeutic methods are to explore our life story written in our body, make it conscious, then adapt and integrate it accompanied by verbal exploratory support.

Body-psychotherapeutic process is an extremely exciting expedition in which a trained, experienced therapist works with the client’s physical and spiritual/mental experiences at the same time, while complying with certain professional and ethical rules.
